The Best Time of Year for Outdoor Family Photos in Houston (Hint: It's Not Summer)
A Woodlands photographer's honest guide to planning your session around the Texas weather — so you actually love the results.
If you've lived in the Houston area for more than five minutes, you know: our weather has its own agenda. One day it's 75 and breezy, the next it's a humid 95 before 9am. As a photographer based in The Woodlands who has shot sessions in every season, I've learned exactly when the magic happens — and when it's best to wait. So if you're trying to plan family photos this year and you keep putting it off because you don't know when to go for it, let me just tell you outright:
October through early December is our golden window. Hands down.
The fall months in the Houston area bring cooler temperatures (finally under 85!), soft golden light, and lush greenery that hasn't fully browned yet. Locations like Terry Hershey Park, Hermann Park, and the trails right here in The Woodlands light up beautifully during this time of year. I love shooting during golden hour — the last 60 minutes before sunset — when that warm, low Texas sun wraps around your family in a way that no filter can replicate. Fall sessions also tend to be the easiest for kids, since cooler temps mean happier, more cooperative little ones. Any Houston mama who has tried to do summer photos with a toddler knows what I mean.
Spring (late February through April) is a close second — and it's honestly underrated around here. The wildflowers start blooming, the bluebonnets make their appearance, and you can get truly stunning outdoor images before the heat moves in. I always recommend booking your spring session early because spots fill fast once the bluebonnet forecast starts making the rounds. Spring light is soft, backgrounds are colorful, and kids in lighter outfits photograph beautifully at this time of year. If you're a planner, this is your sign to get ahead of the crowd.
Not sure what to wear? That's honestly one of my favorite parts of the process. Every Studio Brae client receives a personalized styling guide after booking — with color palettes, outfit ideas, and curated shopping links selected by a professional wardrobe stylist — so you never have to guess. The goal is always for your family to look like yourselves, not like you're wearing a costume for a photo. Whether your vibe is casual and beachy or clean and polished, we'll land on something that feels natural and looks gorgeous. Check availability for your family session here.
